Documentaries and Films on Human Rights

International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival: Human Rights Films

Settling in Seattle: A profile of a day in the life of four refugee youth-from Iraq, Vietnam, Kosovo and Sudan-who have come to build new lives in the US

What I Want My Words To Do To You: Offers an unprecedented look into the minds and hearts of the women inmates of New York's Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The film goes inside a writing workshop led by playwright and activist Eve Ensler, consisting of 15 women, most of whom were convicted of murder. Through a series of exercises and discussions, the women delve into their pasts and explore the nature of their crimes and the extent of their own culpability. The film culminates in an emotionally charged prison performance of the women's writing.

Liberia: an Uncivil War
Focuses on moral failure of the US to respond to a growing humanitarian crisis (also see “Hotel Rwanda” and, in a few years, something on Sudan undoubtedly . . . )

The Battle of Algiers: “Concerns the violent struggle in the late 1950s for Algerian independence from France, where the film was banned on its release for fear of creating civil disturbances.” (Editorial Review, amazon.com)

Bus 174
In Rio de Janeiro, an angry, strung-out former street kid spends an afternoon taking, and later threatening, hostages on a bus while the lurid drama was broadcast live over the national TV networks.

The Farm: Life Inside Angola Prison

Against the Tide of History: Landmines in the Casamance

Control Room (Media Coverage of Iraq War)--WATCH THIS TODAY!!

Life and Debt: How Jamaica's local economy is suffering under unchecked globalization

Sacrifice: Burmese girls trying to survive in Thailand's underground sex trade world

Born into Brothels: About photography, self-expression and life in Calcutta's red light district (also see Salaam Bombay)

Osama: An Afghan girl who dresses like a boy so she is allowed to work and support her family during the Taliban's rule

Gaza Strip

Syriana (based on an ex-CIA's account; a docu-drama)

Super Size Me

This Side of Paradise (docu-drama)

Out Foxed (Murdoch's War on Journalism)

List of Colleges Offering "Peace Studies"
***Many also let students do 'Individual Majors' in Peace Studies i.e. Oberlin College or offer concentrations in Peace Studies as does Swarthmore). The field of Peace Studies is alternatively known as Peace and Conflict Studies, Conflict Analysis and Resolution, and Peace and Justice Studies. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY has an undergraduate concentration in Human Rights and a GRADUATE PROGRAM in Human Rights, Conflict Resolution and Humanitarian Affairs (through the School of International and Public Affairs)

An EXCELLENT Website on Human Rights resources compiled by Peter Spielmann, a professor at Columbia's Journalim School who teaches a seminar on Human Rights Reporting. Great List of Resources for human rights Activists!

BOOKS BY PEACE ADVOCATES:
(Also consider e-mailing Prof. Dennis Dalton at Columbia for more suggestions; he's an EXCELLENT resource and one of the nicest people you'll ever talk to or get to know! He told me that he's absolutely willing to guide complete strangers who are interested in "Peace and Conflict Studies" so don't hesitate to send him a note if you need more book or NGO recommendations).
